Out of Nowhere Privacy Policy

Out of Nowhere respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information is collected when you use the Out of Nowhere mobile application (“the App”), why it is collected, how it is used and shared, and the choices you have about your information.

Out of Nowhere is operated by Jasper Warwood (“Out of Nowhere”, “we”, “us” or “our”). For the purposes of applicable UK data protection law, Jasper Warwood is the data controller responsible for the personal information described in this Privacy Policy.

1. Information we collect

Account information

When you create and use an account, we may collect:

· your email address;

· your full name;

· your username;

· your date of birth;

· your account/user identifier; and

· account creation and authentication information.

We use your date of birth to determine your age and apply age-appropriate privacy and route-sharing protections within the App. Your date of birth is not displayed publicly to other users.

Your password is handled by our authentication provider, Supabase. Out of Nowhere does not store your password within the App itself.

Location and prayer-walk information

The App uses location information to provide its map and prayer-walking features.

When viewing the map, the App may use your current location to show your position or centre the map.

When you choose to start a prayer walk, the App uses precise location information to record your route. Information saved about a prayer walk may include:

· your recorded route;

· start and end times;

· duration;

· distance;

· number of recorded location points; and

· information you provide about participation in the walk.

Prayer-walk route recording begins when you choose to start a walk. If you have granted the necessary device permission, recording may continue while an active prayer walk is running when the App is in the background or your device is locked.

If you pause an active prayer walk, the App stops adding location points to the recorded route until you resume the walk. This means the saved route may contain a gap between the locations where the walk was paused and resumed.

The App does not record and save a prayer-walk route when no prayer walk is active.

You can control location permissions through your device settings. The App also includes a setting controlling whether prayer walks can be started using location.

Whether a saved prayer-walk route is also shared with the community map and heatmap depends on your age and sharing choices, as explained in Sections 3 and 11 below.

Prayer journal

If you use the prayer journal, we store information you choose to enter, which may include:

· journal titles and entries;

· what you prayed for;

· prayer status;

· answered-prayer reflections;

· walk names or information associated with a prayer walk; and

· the date an entry was created.

Your journal entries are associated with your account and are not displayed to other users through the community map or heatmap.

Journal entries contain free text and may therefore contain information about religious beliefs or other personal or sensitive matters if you choose to enter it.

Sharing a prayer-walk route with the community map does not share the contents of your prayer journal with other users.

Profile image

You can optionally select a profile image from your photo library.

Images are decoded and re-encoded before upload rather than uploading the original image file. This removes original embedded image metadata, such as EXIF location information.

Profile images are stored using publicly accessible image URLs. Although the current App does not associate your profile image with a prayer-walk route on the community map, someone who obtains the direct image URL may technically be able to access it.

Settings and notifications

We may store preferences including:

· whether notifications are enabled;

· whether location tracking for prayer walks is enabled;

· reminder times and days;

· your preferred distance unit; and

· where available based on your age, your prayer-walk sharing preference.

If you enable reminders and grant notification permission, the App may schedule notifications on your device.

2. How we use your information

We use information collected through the App to:

· create, authenticate and manage your account;

· determine your age and apply age-appropriate privacy protections;

· provide the App and its features;

· display your current position on the map where permitted;

· record and save prayer walks you choose to undertake;

· calculate walk information such as duration and distance;

· contribute eligible prayer walks to the community map and heatmap where sharing is enabled;

· provide your private prayer journal;

· maintain your profile and preferences;

· provide reminders and notifications you have enabled;

· provide account verification and password-reset functionality;

· maintain the security and reliability of the App; and

· respond to support, privacy and account enquiries.

We do not use your personal information for third-party advertising or cross-app tracking.

The App does not currently use third-party analytics services to analyse your behaviour.

3. Community prayer map and heatmap

The community map and heatmap are core parts of Out of Nowhere.

Prayer walks do not automatically contribute to the community map in every circumstance. Whether a route is shared depends on the user's age and sharing choice.

The current sharing rules are:

· Under 13: Out of Nowhere accounts are not available to users under the age of 13.

· Ages 13–15: prayer walks are saved privately and are not shared with the community map or heatmap.

· Ages 16–17: sharing is decided separately for each prayer walk. Sharing is OFF by default for every new walk. If the user actively chooses to share that walk, an additional privacy-protected representation of the route is used for the community map. This choice does not remain enabled for the next walk.

· Ages 18 and over: community sharing is OFF by default. Adult users can choose to enable the persistent Share prayer walks setting for future walks. If it is enabled, eligible future prayer walks are contributed to the community map and heatmap. Turning the setting on does not automatically publish previous private walks.

Where a walk is shared, other signed-in Out of Nowhere users may see its route and heatmap information derived from it.

Your name, username, email address, profile image, journal content and profile are not displayed or attributed to your route on the community map.

Users cannot tap a community route in the current App to discover who completed it.

However, your saved prayer walk remains associated with your account within Out of Nowhere's systems. This allows the App to provide your own saved information and to delete account-associated data if you delete your account.

Community routes should therefore not be understood as technically anonymous data within our database, even though they are presented to other users without identifying account or profile information.

Private routes and community routes

Your saved prayer-walk information and the route used for community presentation are handled separately where required.

For users aged 16–17 who choose to share a walk, the App creates a separate community representation of the route with additional location privacy protection. Approximately 200 metres are removed from both the beginning and end of the recorded route before the community version is created. The user's full saved route remains private to their own account and is not replaced by the community version.

If a suitable privacy-protected community route cannot be created for a 16–17-year-old's walk, the route is not published to the community map.

These measures reduce the precision of location information exposed through the beginning and end of a younger user's community route. They do not guarantee that a shared route can never reveal information about places a person visited or walked near.

Heatmap information may be calculated using information from eligible shared walks, such as route geometry, duration, participation and how recently a walk took place.

Prayer walks become less prominent within the heatmap as they get older. This visual change does not automatically delete the underlying saved prayer walk.

4. Our reasons for using your information

We process personal information where necessary to provide the App and the features you choose to use, including account functionality, prayer walks, the community map, journal functionality and settings.

We use date-of-birth information to apply age-appropriate access and privacy protections, including determining whether and how a prayer-walk route can be shared with other users.

Some device access depends on choices and permissions you make, including access to location, your photo library and notifications. You can control these permissions through your device and, where available, the App's settings.

Where the App offers a choice about sharing a prayer-walk route, the App uses that choice to determine whether the route is eligible to be contributed to the community map.

We may also process limited information where reasonably necessary to operate, secure and maintain the App and respond to enquiries.

Some information you voluntarily enter, particularly in the prayer journal, may reveal religious beliefs or other sensitive information. We do not use journal text for advertising, behavioural profiling or automated classification.

5. Who processes your information

We use third-party service providers to operate parts of the App.

Supabase provides authentication, database and file-storage infrastructure.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is used to send transactional emails relating to your account, such as account confirmation and password reset emails. AWS processes your email address as necessary to deliver these emails.

Google Maps Platform provides mapping technology used by the App. The Google Maps SDK may process device and network information in accordance with Google's applicable terms and privacy practices.

Your device and operating-system provider, including Apple on iOS, may also process information when providing services such as location, photo selection and notifications.

These providers process information in accordance with their respective terms, privacy policies and applicable data-protection obligations.

We do not sell your personal information.

6. International processing

Some service providers used to operate the App may process personal information in countries outside the United Kingdom. Our database is hosted on servers located in France.

Where international processing or transfers take place, applicable safeguards and data-protection requirements may apply.

7. How long we keep information

We generally retain account information and information you save through the App while your account remains active or for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the App.

There is currently no general automatic time-based deletion period for saved prayer walks or journal information.

A prayer walk becoming less visible or ceasing to contribute visibly to the heatmap does not mean its underlying database record has automatically been deleted.

Where a prayer walk has been shared with the community map, deleting the associated account also removes the account-associated prayer-walk record used to provide that community contribution.

You can delete your account through the App. When account deletion is completed, account-associated profile information, prayer walks, journal entries, user settings, private age information and the current profile image associated with your account are deleted from our systems, with the exception of information we may be legally required or permitted to retain.

8. Your choices and controls

Depending on your age and the feature, you can:

· grant or refuse device permissions;

· control location and notification permissions through your device;

· enable or disable prayer-walk location functionality through the App;

· enable or disable notifications;

· choose reminder days and times;

· edit or delete prayer journal information;

· edit profile information;

· change your profile image;

· make available prayer-walk sharing choices; and

· delete your entire account.

For users aged 16–17, community route sharing is OFF by default for every walk and must be selected separately for each eligible walk.

For users aged 18 and over, the persistent prayer-walk sharing setting is OFF by default. Adults can enable or disable it for future walks.

Users aged 13–15 cannot enable community route sharing.

Deleting a journal entry does not by itself delete the prayer walk associated with it.

The current version of the App does not provide a separate control for deleting an individual saved prayer walk. Deleting your account deletes prayer walks associated with that account.

9. Account deletion

You can initiate account deletion from within the App.

Account deletion is permanent and removes the account and associated App data, including your:

· profile;

· date-of-birth information;

· saved prayer walks;

· community prayer-walk contributions associated with those saved walks;

· prayer journal entries;

· user settings; and

· current profile image stored for the account.

10. Your privacy rights

Depending on the circumstances, UK data-protection law may give you rights regarding your personal information, including rights to:

· request access to information we hold about you;

· ask us to correct inaccurate information;

· ask us to delete information;

· request restriction of certain processing;

· object to certain uses of your information;

· request portability of certain information; and

· withdraw consent where processing relies on your consent.

These rights may apply differently depending on the circumstances and the legal basis on which information is processed.

11. Children's privacy and age-appropriate protections

Out of Nowhere is designed so that younger users receive additional privacy protections.

Users under 13

Out of Nowhere accounts are not available to children under the age of 13.

We ask for a date of birth during account creation so that the App can determine which age-appropriate protections apply.

Users aged 13–15

Users aged 13–15 can use eligible private prayer-walking and journal functionality, but their prayer-walk routes are not shared with the community map or heatmap.

There is no setting that allows a user in this age group to enable community route sharing.

Their saved prayer walks remain associated with their own account so that the App can provide their private saved information and account-management functionality.

Users aged 16–17

Users aged 16–17 can choose whether to share an eligible prayer walk with the community map.

Sharing is OFF by default for every individual walk. A user must make a new choice each time they want to share a prayer walk. Choosing to share one walk does not automatically enable sharing for future walks.

When a user aged 16–17 chooses to share a walk, the App uses a separate community representation of the route with additional location privacy protection around its beginning and end.

If a suitable privacy-protected community route cannot be created, the walk remains private and is not published to the community map.

The user's full saved route remains associated with their private account information. Their journal content remains private and is not included with the shared community route.

Users aged 18 and over

Users aged 18 and over can choose whether future eligible prayer walks are contributed to the community map using the App's Share prayer walks setting.

This setting is OFF by default.

If an adult enables sharing, eligible future prayer walks can be contributed to the community map and heatmap. Enabling the setting does not automatically publish older walks that were previously private.

Adults can turn this setting off again for future prayer walks.

Location and younger users

Prayer-walk location recording does not begin simply because a user has an account or opens the App.

Recording begins when the user deliberately starts a prayer walk. While an active prayer walk is being recorded, location recording may continue in the background or while the device is locked where the necessary device permissions have been granted.

The App does not save an ongoing prayer-walk route when no prayer walk is active.

We recognise that location information can be particularly sensitive for younger users. The age-specific sharing restrictions described above are designed to reduce the amount of younger users' location information made visible to other users.

12. Accuracy of age information

The privacy protections described in this policy depend on the date of birth supplied when an account is created.

Users should provide their correct date of birth.

The App uses the supplied date of birth to calculate age and apply the appropriate protections as the user gets older.

A date of birth cannot normally be changed by the user after account creation.

13. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures designed to protect information handled through the App.

These measures include access controls intended to restrict private account information, journal information and private prayer-walk information to appropriate access within the service.

Community prayer-walk information is provided separately from private account information so that identifying profile information is not presented alongside routes to other users.

However, no internet-based service or method of electronic storage can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

14. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the App, our practices or applicable requirements change.

When we update the policy, we will change the “Last updated” date above. Where appropriate, we may provide additional notice of significant changes.
